of Fisheries
Introduction :
Fishery
means judicious exploitation of aquatic resources . Now a days, the main source
of income of the people of Barjora Dev. Block i.e. from agriculture has reached
in a stagnant position. On the other hand Barjora is rich of aquatic resources
which are unexploited or less exploited till date. So, there is an ample scope
of adoption of scientific pisciculture in those aquatic resources. Thus not
only it helps to uplift socio-economic status of the people actively engaged in
pisciculture there on but also make those water body free from pollution and
control the growth rate of mosquitoes, the vector many diseases viz. Malaria,
Fileria, Dengue, Encephalitis etc.
As
fish is the rich source of animal protein and market demand is more in
comparison to supply of table fishes, so there is an ample scope of
flourishment of this sector. It is also to be consider that Bankura ranks first
in production of fish seed (almost 70 %) is West Bengal.
Type
of fisheries exists at Barjora :
Only
two types of inland fishery exists at Barjora Dev. Block .
A) Cultural Fishery : Mainly in the pond, reservoir etc.
B) Capture Fishery : Mainly on river
Damodar and Durgapur Barrage.
Natural
Resources:
A) Water Area : Total : 1275 ha. of which i) Culturable : 975 ha. ii)
Derelict: 208 ha. iii) Semi-derelict – 92 ha.
B) Geographical Position: Barjora is
situated in the northern portion of District Bankura, upper reaches of river
Damodar farming its northern boundary flowing from east to west.
River Shali divided the block almost
in two halves. Both the river has the tendency to changing its course. Thus
farming many reservoirs.
C) Soil Texture : Almost 75% of its area is covered by red lateritic soil
and the rest is sandy loam type .
Soil PH : Mainly acidic in reaction.
NPK value of soil : As the soil is acidic in reaction and organic carbon
is less NPK availability is always in lower side of the scale. On the other
hand the
nature of lateritic soil is to form a colloid thus availability of NPK
decreases.
D) Rainfall :- On an average – 1300 mm to 1400 mm
rainfall / year observed. But the maximum rain falls only 10 – 12 days. So,
wastage of rain water as well as erosion of soil is the main problem. It is
acute in the G.Ps. beside the rivers.
Animal
& Plant Resources :
A) Aquatic flora : Common aquatic fauna
observed.
B) Aquatic fauna :
Some endangered sp. Viz. L.kalbasu , Nandos sp. , A. mola etc. are found
mainly in river Damodar, which is very rich in aquatic resources.
Human
Resources :
Now a days almost one person out of five are
engaged in pisciculture partly of fully. There is a tendency of energetic youth
in increased nos. gradually showing their interest in pisciculture.
Other
Characters :
Productivity
: Some success has already been achieved if we see the market price of
table fish which is static during the last four or five yrs. Through demand of
table fish increases day after day considering the growth of population.
Productivity of F.F.D.A. pond : 4600 kgs / ha /
yr
Productivity of Non-F.F.D.A. pond : 1800 kgs /
ha / yr
Productivity in Co-operative Sector : 1500 kgs
/ ha / yr
Productivity in other reservoir : 600 kgs / ha
/ yr
Hatchery
:
One fish seed production centre is running at Jambedia under F.F.D.A. scheme.
Co-Operative :
Three nos. of co-operative exists, but only one
co-operative Dadhimukha P.F.C.S is functioning. Other two is defunct.
Administrative
St. :
Only one F.E.O. and one F.A posted in the
block. F.E.O. acts as C.E.O of the co-operative societies also.
Running
scheme with special reference to performance of this year 2007-08
I.
F.F.D.A scheme : Sanctioning Bank loan and subsidy to the beneficiary so
that they can adopt scientific pisciculture .
This year target : 8 ha.
Sponsored till date : 12 ha.
I.
Short Term scheme :
a) Pisciculture : This
year target was – 10 ha.
Sponsored
till date : 4 ha.
70 ha.
Water area shall be sponsored within a very short period.
b) Allied activity : 10
nos.
Two nos.
sanctioned so far.
II.
Training : 84 persons of which 12 persons under F.F.D.A. scheme . 50
persons under R.S.V.Y scheme and 22 persons under S.G.S.Y group has already
been trained on scientific pisciculture.
III.
Soil and water test : Done regularly.
Minikit
Distribution :
Already 230 units has
already been distributed amongst the flood affected beneficiary. Each unit
consists of fish seed = 13 kgs. Lime = 15 kgs.
10 units distributed
to Dadhimukha P.F.C.S.
Under
this scheme 5 ha. Water area , 3 ha. in Brindabanpur G.P. and 2 ha. in
Goderdihi G.P. re-excavated and scientific pisciculture is practicing there.
8
nos. of Drag net and 16 alluminium hundies will be distributed to selected 8
groups shortly.
20
nos. of Cast net and 20 alluminium hundies will be distributed to selected 20
beneficiaries shortly.
Role Of F.E.O :
1.
Execution of the
said scheme.
2.
Acts as C.E.O. of
P.F.C.S.
3.
Nodal Officer of
B.D-30
4.
Transfer of
scientific pisciculture practice and advice given to the fisherman.
5.
Implementation of
Inland fisheries act.
Conclusion :
Though
some achievement has already been obtained but there is a lot of scope of
development till exists but shortage of manpower and conservative mentality of
the shareholder of the pond almost all ponds are under multi-ownership. Hope
good wishes of all and department’s activity shall solve the problem in near
future.
